Pieter Rombouts Amsterdam 1695
Pieter Rombouts (1667 - 1740) was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He was a pupil and step-son of Hendrik Jacobs. Most, if not all, cellos with the Jacobs label can be ascribed to Rombouts. Rombouts ran his own workshop in Sint Antoniessbreestraat and later in Botermarkt. He made violins, violas, cellos, pochettes and viols.
His early work is similar to Jacobs, but later he developed a more independent style and deep thick red varnish. Generally his instruments have quite broad patterns with full arching and widely spaced f-holes. The corners are relatively short, and the scrolls have tight well regulated volutes with extended final turns. Pegboxs are deeply fluted and broad across the back. Some instruments have carved lion heads.
