Natalie Carletti Pieve de Cento, 1950
Natale Carletti (1904 - 1979) began working in his father's workshop when he was about 12. He received a performance degree for cello and bass from the Bologna Music Academy and learned instrument making from his father, Carlo, who was a well-regarded, self-taught luthier. Natale took over the shop when Carlo died in 1941.
Carletti was a highly productive maker, building more than 200 cellos and winning gold and silver medals in national and international competitions. He followed Stradivari patterns as well as his personal model, with varnish ranging from golden-yellow to deep red.
