Leon Victor Mougenot Mirecourt, 1920 Certificate of Authenticity.
Leon Victor Mougenot (1874 - 1954) was the son of Joseph Mougeno, also a violin maker. He worked for E. Laurent and later for George Mougenot in Brussels 1887-1894, Blanchard in Lyon 1894 - 1896, and W. E. Hill & Sons in london 1896 - 1898. He opened his own shop in Mirecourt in 1899, where he taught many young makers. He won a gold medal in the Nancy 1909 exposition. Mougeno's worksmanship was very accurate, and he built instruments modeled after several classical makers. His varnish changed depending on the instrument he was replicating.
This cello is from Mougenot's Mirecourt period and features a fine golden varnish over a Stradivari-inspired outline. The corners are narrow, long, and stylish, and the scroll is robust and confidently carved.
